How to Protect Your Investment from Hurricanes, Humidity & Post-Storm Damage

Florida boating has its perks—year-round sunshine, incredible lakes, and an unbeatable lifestyle. But as any local boater knows, our state also brings unique challenges when it comes to weather. From the relentless humidity to the threat of hurricanes, your boat faces a lot more wear and tear than in other regions.

Whether you’re new to boat ownership or a seasoned captain, staying ahead of Florida’s extreme weather can save you thousands in repairs—and protect your investment for years to come. In this guide, we’re breaking down the biggest threats and giving you practical tips for both prevention and recovery.

Hurricane Prep for Boats: Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

Hurricane season in Central Florida runs from June through November, and being unprepared can lead to catastrophic damage. Here’s what to consider:

  • Have a Storm Plan: Know where your boat will go in the event of a hurricane. Whether it’s a secure dry stack, a trailerable option inland, or a hurricane-rated dock, the plan needs to be made well before the forecast changes.
  • Remove Loose Items: Anything not bolted down—Bimini tops, cushions, electronics—should be removed to avoid flying debris damage.
  • Double Up on Lines & Fenders: If you must dock your boat, use extra mooring lines with chafe protection and reinforce all contact points with fenders.
  • Battery & Bilge Check: Fully charge your battery and ensure your bilge pump is functional in case of flooding.
